One of the things we’ve been working on in Math class is the chapter five “Mid Chapter Review” on page 136 of the text book (bigger one…).
Questions 1 through 4 are due on Friday.

We are finalizing the written part of speeches this week in class. Please bring any materials you need to work on it Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday when it’s due for hand-in. On Thursday, we will draw names for order of speeches next week in front of the class.
Our math test tomorrow is about classifying triangles 2 ways (lessons 3 and 4 from chapter 7). There’s also symmetry and constructing angles up to 90 degrees.
You can check out the online lessons from Nelson Publishers. Just follow the link from the left side of this blog. I’ve put a Nelson link to the grade five textbook material.
Tomorrow, we will have a carol sing assembly in the morning, a secret Santa gift exchange and snack time in the middle block, and then possibly some Christmas videos and final room clean-up at the end of the day. DON’T FORGET YOUR SECRET SANTA! If everyone remembers to bring their small gift ($5.00 or less in value) all gift exchangers can go home with it before the winter break.
The math test for Tuesday is about using intervals on a bar graph. Don’t forget, first you find the range, then you divide the range by the number of bars you want (round the range to something divisible) and then your answer to the division question is going to be the size of your interval. Remember that each interval is to be the same size. Count out the numbers on your hand if necessary and make certain the the highest and lowest values from your data set can be represented in the intervals that you “build”. A good example was from lesson 4 in the text book or #3 on page 84 in the Skills Bank (the one we did together today on the board).
Many grade five students in the portable have asked to do a Secret Santa gift exchange. So, we will do it on a voluntary basis on Friday this week. Today, we have exchanged names. I have set a five dollar limit on the value of any gifts given. Gifts can be either home made or store bought and will be exhanged during Friday afternoon at school.
Most students have also expressed an interest in bringing in some snacks to share for Friday. I have asked them to think about what they’d like to bring and let me know by tomorrow (Tues, Dec. 18th) so that we can prepare ahead of time. Again, bringing in snacks will be completely voluntary.
On Monday (Dec. 17) we will have the first two questions of our math test. They will focus on chapter three, lessons 1 and 2 (understanding survey questions, and on broken line graphs). In chapter three of our text book, here is all of the questions that are focused on what we covered for chapter three.

Page 86-87 #1,2,4,5,6,7
On Tuesday, the test question will cover bar graphs with intervals (e.g. page 84 #3) and then on Wednesday the test will cover the remainder (e.g. information from chapter three, lessons 6 and 8)
Assigned for tonight was the Nelson Workbook (or photocopy) page 25.
Our Patterning test has been graded and handed back. Please sign and return all tests so that we can store them in our portfolio system in the portable.
